Reviews and how I do them

I review things. Not because I am necessarily qualified to do so, but because I want to. It comes from my hope of sharing things I like, and my intention is to only focus on the positives on this blog, but every now and then, I read a stinker (It’s much more rare that I would listen to an album that would rub me the wrong way so much that I would negatively review it, but books are fair game).

Books

I don’t do chapter-by-chapter summaries, and I try my best not to spoil the end. I will highlight points that really work with me, and I’ll talk about what I’ve discovered while reading the book, and maybe bring up some interesting facts about the author, and if I’ve read a lot of that author’s works, I may compare one work to others.

Music

I like to talk about how the music makes me feel. It’s rare that I’ll provide a full track-by-track – instead, I would rather just write the highlights about what makes the album and certain tracks special.

Scores

Simple 1-10 process here. It’s rare you’ll see anything below 5 or 6, just because I usually only care to talk about something if I really like it. The low stuff will show up if I hate something so much I want to warn people away (I would call this rare).

10 – Best of the best. Should be in everyone’s collection and deserves a read/listen at least once.
8-9 – Amazing stuff that may not be everyone’s bag but is of superb quality nonetheless.
6-7 – Better than most of the stuff out there.
5 – You know what a 5 means. Middle of the road. C student. Average. No better than or worse than most other things.
3-4 – Not much quality to this. Not offensively bad, but doesn’t have much going for it. Could be due to quality of production or just middling artistry.
1-2 – Cannot recommend. Bottom of the barrel. Very few (if any) redeeming quality. Possibly ollowing a trend with little artistic integrity, or just gross and/or heinous.
0 – I doubt I’d give something a 0 unless it was literally written as nothing more than a marketing tool to sell a product – meaning no artistry was involved and doesn’t deserve existing.
